Towards the end of 2014, we were told about a young boy from Essex, Georgie Nye, who suffers from a neuromuscular condition known as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, who had been let down on a promise of getting his dream Mini Cooper bed.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy affects as many as 2,500 boys in the UK and due to the progressive muscle deterioration, requires many adaptations to the home environment. As part of these adaptations, Georgie had chosen a Mini Cooper themed bed, but unfortunately the local company who had initially promised to provide it had not followed through on their promise.
Our Little Part In Making a Difference
With Georgie bitterly disappointed, a concerned neighbour reach out to Flights of Fantasy after they saw that we made bespoke furniture and themed beds, and asked if we could make the bed at a discount so that they could raise enough for Georgie’s new bed. We couldn’t possibly say no and it was an absolute pleasure and delight to see Georgie’s face when he saw the Mini Cooper bed for the very first time.
Rolling Back The Years
Our highly skilled craftsman, Peter Bailey, came temporarily out of retirement to work on this bed. As a huge part of our company for multiple decades, it was a pleasure to have him back in the workshop and seeing him involved in such a heartfelt project. The bed design features a reading light, two drawers, mirrors, and a steering wheel. It is finished in bright red, a Mini Copper classic, and we fitted a customised number plate with Georgie’s name on it.
We got this little bit of feedback from TJ, Georgie’s mum.
“The bed is amazing! Thank you all so much.”
Georgie’s parents, TJ and Barry Nye, have been fund raising to support the research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy since 2011 and, since then, have been able to raise over £30k for this cause. They have also been raising funds to adapt their home for Georgie’s future, so that he will have the equipment he needs to get around his house easily.
