Play Trains & Train Themed Play Equipment
Our trains never fail to delight. Whether you want a single wooden play train as a feature in your garden, or a centrepiece for a large play area, complete with station and carriages, we can make this happen. Our past trains have been play replicas of existing trains with play features incorporated into their design.
Our Past Creations
Probably our favourite train play area due to its size and having a station, the GWR play steam train we built at Wallington Hall for the National trust is a wonderful example of what we can make.
Nestled in the forest for visitors to chance upon, the train and station proved to be such a success that we were invited back to make a fort at Wallington Hall shortly afterwards.
One of two Swedish trains we made, the BLJ 4 Langshyttan is a faithful recreation of its real-life counterpart which passes by the play version regularly.
The smaller of the two Swedish trains, the Patric Reutersward is, like its bigger brother, a faithful recreation and one of our most recent trains.
A general train design, this wooden outdoor train is based on a Pacific Locomotive. It’s been used for play areas and shipped as far away as the UAE.
The Runcorn train was built to act as a centrepiece for an existing train themed play area. Its strong design and construction means it’s still in good condition in an area that previously suffered heavily from vandalism.
The Design Process
If you can dream it, we can build it. We have built trains of varying sizes and styles to meet our clients’ criteria, and we are happy to work with strict guidelines or to help you find what you are looking for by coming up with some ideas.
When we first speak with a client, we discuss the project requirements and then come up with a design which we show to the client. Once the client has approved the design and play features, that’s when the magic happens – we bring the vision to life.
Throughout the construction process we can send you photo updates so that you can see the progress of your play area and, if you wish, get other people excited about it. This allows you to know what is going on with your creation and has proven to be a very successful form of publicity for public playgrounds.
Shown here are the two Swedish trains (the Patric Reutersward and the BLJ 4 Langshyttan) that we built simultaneously for different sites. At this stage in development you can see the trains taking shape, but you don’t quite know how they will finish up which adds to the intrigue.
Having progress pictures is a good way to reflect on the progress of an attraction and see how you have grown over time. And whilst it is the finished piece of play apparatus that will be admired, seeing how the process takes place and the skill of the craftsmanship only heightens appreciation for the play area.
Miniature Replica Play Trains
Because everything we construct is custom made, we can recreate famous trains and have found this to be a popular request in the past. We love the challenge of studying a complex machine, picking out its defining features, and then simplifying its design whilst retaining the characteristics that make it recognisable. Once we’ve added in the play apparatus you have something you recognise, but at the same time, something you have never seen before.
We have also recreated famous landmarks including historic homes and famous castles.
The trains pictured with their replicas, from top to bottom, are:
- GWR steam train and replication at Wallington Hall, along with a play train station.
- Pacific Locomotive and replication shipped to UAE. We made a similar replica that remained in the UK, at Runcorn.
- BLJ 4 Langshyttan and replication that was shipped to Sweden.
We have delivered trains to Sweden, United Arab Emirates (which was quite an adventure), and the UK, and we look forward to the opportunity of taking our play trains even further afield.
All of our trains are constructed at our workshop in Norfolk by our team of highly skilled craftsmen, then carefully shipped to your home or business where we complete the installation on site. This process can range from a few hours to multiple days, depending upon the complexity of the project.
Once installed, we provide a maintenance program to ensure that your play area will always look as fantastic as it did on the day when it was first installed. With correct maintenance, our trains will last for many, many years and be enjoyed by countless numbers of children.
Customisable Play Features
Every single one of our items is completely bespoke and made to the specification of our clients. We are able to fit any pieces of play equipment onto our trains, so don’t be afraid to make some suggestions of what you would like incorporated into your design. Some of the more popular pieces of play equipment that we have included on trains in the past have been:
- Slide Poles
- Climb walls
- Climb over train bodies
- Crawl through train bodies
- Anything else you can think of!
Designing Your Play Train
