A Themed Play Area
The indoor play area at Whisby Natural World Centre tells the story of Whisby Pit’s history. Originally open fields, the area became a large, commercial gravel pit, worked for many years with heavy machinery. Once barren and lifeless, the landscape has now been reclaimed by nature, offering visitors walking trails that pass through lakes, grassland, marsh, scrub, and willow carr. As the landscape has flourished, so too has the wildlife. Through summer the park attracts flocks of tits, finches, and warblers, whilst the lakes attract feeding sand martins and swallows, and terns nest on the islands. Reed and sedge warblers, as well as chiffchaffs can also be heard, and the park has also become famous for nightingales. Autumn brings gold crests, redpolls, and grey wagtails, and by winter the water levels are at their highest and the wildfowl at their most numerous.
Unique and interactive, our indoor play area showcases the story of Whisby pits, contrasting the former industrial landscape with the wonderful wildlife reserve it has become. Nowhere else will you find a play weigh-bridge, gravel truck, and gravel extraction plant! Not to mention the natural play area, with computer graphics showing the local landscape and landmarks through the seasons, on walls and floor.
This indoor play area is very in keeping with our love of creating site specific play areas that reflect the natural world around them and it was a pleasure to work on such a unique project. We are grateful that the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust regenerated this wonderful park and that the North Kesteven District Council allowed us to flex our creativity on this play area.
