Depending on what we are making, we use many timbers in our constructions, but we focus heavily on the use of locally grown, sustainably sourced hardwoods such as oak and sweet chestnut. Whilst we use coppiced sweet chestnut in many of our outdoor play areas – the hand stripped tree lengths you will have seen across this site – we use oak for a great many purposes due to its incredible durability. Oak is more durable and environmentally friendly than treated softwoods, and the slight increase in initial cost is offset by the longevity of the structure. Our demand for sawn green oak became so great that we have now opened our own oak sawmill, supplying sawn green oak across the UK.
Quercast Sawmilling: A British Green Oak Supplier
At the end of 2017, we opened Quercast Sawmilling and have been supplying the UK market with British grown oak ever since. Our oak is milled in Norfolk before being delivered across the country, although collection from our milling site is also possible.
We can cut whole tree trunks into whatever thickness you need, large or small. At the smaller end of our cutting capabilities, we regularly cut 100mm featheredged board, 5mm at the thin side and 15mm at the thick side, however we can handle extremely large cuts as listed below:
- Cut Length: Up to 6.1m in standard form
- Max Cut Size: Up to 254mm x 254mm (10” x 10”)
