St. John’s School Playground Pirate Ship

The Plank St. Johns School Pirate Ship Play AreaA pirate ship play area complete with a plank (as all good, play pirate ships should be) and many other pupil-requested features set the theme for this custom designed playground pirate ship. We designed it specifically with special physical needs in mind, ensuring that it would be accessible to everyone.

The Brief: Disability-Friendly Inspired Play

We were to design and construct a pirate ship playground feature which would inspire and challenge the children of St John’s School. It would need to accommodate all of the children’s special needs and have disabled access. The play ground had to incorporate certain elements which the children had specifically requested, so we dutifully incorporated the chosen elements of a large ship mast with sail, cabins and a walk-the-plank feature into this very special themed play area.

Overcoming Barriers: Durability and High Volume Traffic

The pirate ship playground had to be durable enough to withstand the outdoor elements and to cope with the high volume of children who would be putting it through its paces on a daily basis.

Entrance St. Johns School Pirate Ship Play Area 1Materials & Imagination: Bright, Bold & Afloat on the Ocean!

The realistic pirate play ship was built using a cost effective hardwood posts-and-panel type construction which ensured the play equipment would be durable and built to last. Despite being installed over five years ago and withstanding heavy use by many school children, the pirate ship has stood the test of time and is in excellent condition.

The pirate ship was finished to an intricate level of detail using bright red and blue paints, giving it a bold, attractive appearance that is exceptionally stimulating for children with special needs.

To really set off the pirate ship, we arranged for it to appear to be ‘afloat’. We laid ‘wetpour’ specialist safety surfacing designed to look just like the ocean, complete with an authentic speckled white spray effect at the bow of the ship.

Accessories and Apparatus: An Irresistible Physical Challenge

With passageways to cabins and two ladders, this pirate ship looks astonishingly realistic and irresistible to children who can’t wait to step aboard and embark on their make-believe journeys.

A climbing net, slide, plank, and climbing wall complete the accessories added to the pirate ship which physically challenge and stimulate the children.

Within the safety surfacing equipment, specific designs were added to imaginatively link in with the themed play equipment. A huge crocodile silhouette appears to float near to the pirate ship which the children have relished in trying to avoid whilst leaping between the stepping stone sea creatures of jellyfish and starfish.

Project Summary

This very special themed play ground with its feature pirate ship was designed around the school children’s very own adventurous dreams and provides a stimulating environment for them to discover and develop.
