Built for MERL, The Museum of English Rural Life in Reading, this wooden play tractor is based upon several old Fordson tractors. The museum has a huge collection of vintage tractors ranging back as far as 1917, and brings in many tractor fans, young and old. As the real tractors can be delicate, and sometimes dangerous, MERL wanted a play tractor that was robust enough to stand up to rough play and the elements, whilst being fully accessible for children (and adults) to play with. We created a wooden play tractor and trailer from oak and sweet chestnut, both durable timbers, meaning that this tractor will be enjoyed for many years to come. It even has real tractor tyres and several different ways children can play with it.
Building The Tractor
Like of all our creations, we built this wooden play tractor by hand at our workshop in Norfolk. Once it was complete, we transported it to MERL where it was installed, along with a fall surface to make the environment safer for children.
