A True-To-Life Play Train Replica
This is the slightly larger of the two replica, Swedish play trains that we built (the other being the Patric Reutersward), and is located in Uppsala, Sweden’s fourth largest city. This unique train distinguishes itself by being a near flawless representation of the original locomotive, which can be seen every time it thunders by on the historic railway located just a few metres away.
The Brief: To Make Something Truly Unique
Do you remember being a child and making miniature models of play trains – that’s what we do now, except we make giant replica play trains for children. Everything down to the striking red and black colours, and the waisted funnel is faithful to the original BLJ 4 Langshyttan locomotive.
The major differences between the original and our creation are that our play train features many different pieces of play apparatus to engage children and heighten their enjoyment of our play apparatus.
Materials and Imagination
To create a shiny, lifelike appearance we used a lot of hard work and glossy paint to coat the domes and funnel. Like all our trains to date, it sits upon a small stretch of railway track to complete the realism.
Every square inch of the train’s boiler is climbable and adorned with climb holds, handles and ladders. The full list of apparatus features:
- Fireman’s Pole
- Climb Ladder
- Climb over and under boiler
- Climb wall on both sides of the train
- Footplates and barriers
- Accessible interior can and body
Project Summary: A Project To Remember
Installing this train was a real pleasure. With the sun shining, the original locomotive steaming by with the cabin crew and passengers waving as they passed by, Flights of Fantasy will fondly remember the trip to Sweden.
The BLJ 4 Langshyttan is just one design from our ever growing fleet of trains and, as with all our products, is fully customisable. Changing the colour, varying the play features, or even adding a station (like we did at Wallington) are all possibilities.
We really enjoyed the challenge of replicating such an iconic train and would love the opportunity to make replicas of other famous trains, so if you have an idea for a play train (or some other play idea), please get in contact with us to discuss a potential project.
